The recovery experience is a major factor in how well patients feel about a non-appearance related medical surgical procedure. Cosmetic procedures like a breast augmentation are no different. Organizations in large cities like New York City are developing recovery hideaways that offer quiet, a peaceful environment and loads of privacy. Although the recovery rooms are located near medical facilities, they are tucked far enough away from the hustle and noise of a major metropolis to entice patients to focus on resting so they can return to their normal routines as soon as possible.
As word about these recovery rooms spreads, the trend of people traveling to large areas like New York City to receive a breast augmentation is growing. The New York Magazine points to another major reason why more people are opting to stay at recovery rooms in New York City after they receive cosmetic surgery, including a breast augmentation.
The magazine states, “Why pay thousands to stay in a sterile hospital room with a roommate the night after your cosmetic surgery? Instead, you can pay a fraction of that and recuperate in one of several fine establishments in New York that cater to the post-plastic-surgery patient.”
Before getting a breast augmentation, women are encouraged to consult with their plastic surgeon, asking questions about the surgeon’s experience, how long the procedure will take and what to expect during the recovery period. If this is the first time a woman has received cosmetic surgery, she should consider having a consultation with three or more experienced and licensed plastic surgeons, so she can make a decision that is right for her.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Initially, you’ll consult with a plastic surgeon about your preferences for size, feel and overall appearance of your breasts. The surgeon will describe specific types of implants — smooth or textured, round or shaped like a teardrop, saline or silicone — as well as options for surgical techniques.” (Click here for more information about breast augmentation, including when its best to have the surgery, when results from the surgery will show and how to prepare to receive breast implants.)
Experienced plastic surgeons will also discuss risks associated with the procedure. For example, they will discuss scarring and soreness that a woman might experience post surgery. The need to recover fully is important. It’s also important that women check in with their plastic surgeons and later their general practitioners regularly for years after they receive a breast augmentation.
Although breast implants have been reported to be safe by the FDA, they may not last a lifetime. They also are not designed to keep a woman’s breasts from sagging as she ages. Additionally, should a woman plan on having a baby, she should let her plastic surgeon know.
By openly discussing expectations, concerns and questions with an experienced plastic surgeon, women can have the peace of mind that they weighed their options. They’ll probably also learn that it’s a good idea to take before and after pictures, so they can see how effective and successful the surgery has been.
