Get Fit With Zumba

By -

Zumba has been around since 1999, but it’s seen a major boost in popularity over the past couple years, with many women turning to Zumba programs to get in better shape and lose weight. It’s now one of the most popular group exercise classes in the world, and is practiced by over 12 million people in 125 countries internationally.

What is Zumba?
Zumba classes, led by certified instructors, use a combination of salsa, Latin and hip-hop music and high-impact choreography to create an intense and fun workout. The classes, found these days at most major gyms and fitness studios, are usually an hour long and should include a good warm-up and cool-down for maximum effect. Many people have found that the fun, exuberant atmosphere of Zumba classes and the dance element of the workout encourage them to feel positive about exercise, as they genuinely enjoy the class.
How does it improve your fitness?
The high intensity of a Zumba class makes it a great aerobic and cardiovascular workout, meaning it’ll burn fat and help you lose weight as well as keeping your heart healthy. To boost the effects of a Zumba class, you should incorporate strength-training exercises alongside the classes, allowing you to build muscle and improve your overall fitness level
Getting started
If you already have a gym membership, check out the class listings to see if your gym offers Zumba. If not, you should be able to find independent classes and instructors in your area by searching online. If the classes don’t appeal or you’re on a tight budget but want to give Zumba a try, you can always invest in one of many Zumba fitness DVDs now available to buy and use in your own home, and incorporate the workout into your day from the comfort of your living room.
