Choosing the right accessories can make or break an outfit, and perhaps no accessory is more timeless and versatile than a necklace. Necklaces can be worn with practically any type of outfit, but in order to get the most flattering and stylish look, it is important to match your necklace to your neckline. Today, women’s necklaces come in many different styles, so you are all but guaranteed to be able to find one that perfectly matches your favorite dress or shirt.
Use this guide to determine what type of necklace to wear with the most popular styles of neckline.
Choose a necklace with a round shape that follows the curve of the neckline. Avoid choosing a necklace that sits right on the neckline. If the cut is low, wear a short necklace that sits well above it, and if the cut is high, wear a long strand that hangs well below.
Once again, choose a necklace that follows the shape of the neckline. A necklace with a dangling pendant is often a good choice. As with the round neckline, accessorize with a necklace that is either longer or shorter than the neckline.
Successfully wearing a necklace with a halter neck is relatively difficult since halter necks generally already have some ornamentation around the neck area. However, a long delicate necklace that hangs down to the chest is possible to pull off.
Collared shirts look good with a wide variety of necklaces, but it is best to pair them with relatively conservative or informal jewelry. Necklaces with bold, chunky beads can be fun to wear with a collared neckline. Since you will probably have to wear the necklace under the collar with only a portion peeping out, it is a good way to mute the effect of a necklace that might otherwise be a little too loud.
Avoid sharp angles when choosing a necklace to wear with this angular neckline. Wear a round necklace similar to what you might wear with a round neckline, or pair your square neckline with a choker or collar-type necklace.
Strapless Gown or Shirt
Strapless necklines are meant to show a little skin, so don’t make the mistake of covering up with a necklace that is too large or chunky. Pair this type of neckline with a delicate chain or string of beads for a casual style, or with a choker when you want a more formal look.
Cowl necks create a lot of embellishment at the neck already, so it may be best to go without a necklace when wearing one. However, a dainty necklace such as a small pendant or a single string of pearls can be a welcome addition to some cowl necklines, so don’t be afraid to experiment a little.
Plunging or Embellished Neckline
Necklines that already have a lot of decorations or embellishment are not meant to be worn with necklaces. Accessorize with earrings, bracelets, and brooches instead.
Matching your necklace to the neckline of your dress or shirt is key to putting together the most flattering outfit possible. Try to choose a necklace that accentuates but doesn’t overwhelm the shape of your neckline.
