Decisions, Decisions: What Type of Braces is Right for You?

By -

Many have spent years looking in the mirror at crooked teeth, and wondering what they should do to fix them. Braces have come a long way, and there are now many more options for those who want to improve their appearance and boost their self-esteem. There are many different and exciting options for braces, so those who want something different aren’t limited anymore. All of these new options mean that this is no longer a feared period of teenage life, but something that many look forward as a sign of age and maturity. Dr. Barbieri of Barbieri Orthodontics in Tennessee says he is proud to offer “cutting-edge choices for your dental braces, including Invisalign and the Damon System, a state-of-the-art treatment that offers many benefits for patients.”

BracesTraditional Metal Braces

These are the more traditional braces that most people think of when the word first crosses their mind. They come in either a silver or gold color, and they may be somewhat irritating to the gums. However, eventually your mouth will often change in order to accommodate for this. The ligatures used for them come in many different colors, making it fun for people to come up with fun new color schemes. Always remember to be careful with what is eaten when wearing these, as well as to work on learning to floss correctly with them.

Ceramic Braces

This is a great option for those who are concerned about some of the unwanted impacts of traditional braces, as ceramic braces don’t stain the teeth. They take on the color of the teeth, and they are less noticeable than metal braces. In order to make them even less obvious, there are several types of ties that are used to hold these brackets together. One of them is an elastic tie, and the other is a metal tie with a white coating. The only drawbacks to these braces is that they are somewhat more expensive and are more susceptible to fracturing or breaking than metal braces.

Clear Braces, Like Invisalign

One of the most attractive options to many, especially adults, is the newer clear braces. These will be very well hidden, so that people don’t feel embarrassed about others noticing that they are wearing braces. Impressions will be made of the teeth, and these clear braces or retainers will be made and shipped within several weeks. You can even take these ones off to eat, brush your teeth and floss. One of the only issues with these is that not everybody is a good candidate, and they are not for children who are going to have adult teeth growing in.

Smart Brackets Braces, Like the Damon System

Another interesting innovation in braces is smart brackets, which will eliminate the need for orthodontics to change the elastics since the braces are self-ligating (have a movable component). This can dramatically reduce the amount of the time that the braces are needed, and it can remove some of the friction and pressure which can make the braces feel uncomfortable. They are also held tighter to the teeth than traditional brackets, making them somewhat less noticeable. Another advantage is that these are very similar in price to traditional braces, making them available to many people. These are all modern options for those who want to improve the look of their smile. With these great new choices, people can find the system that works the best for them.
